Alison Evans, El Paraíso Golf captain.
Alison Evans already had experience in this position when she was elected captain for El Paraíso last May. Fifteen years ago she held the same position in her club at her home country, England. This fact, her lovely smile and her people skills, besides the fact that is she now living in Costa del Sol most of the time, made her the elected captain last May. Thus, when there are only three months left for her mandate to be over, she strikes a very positive balance of her captaincy: “I had a lot of fun. I love being surrounded by people. I’ve been a member of this club for 35 years and I’m really enjoying this position. As I had previously been a captain, I already knew what it meant and I love organizing competitions, meeting with the members and sending the newsletters”, she claims with a nice smile and a sparkling eyes.
El Paraíso Club has nowadays 600 members. Most of them are English and Irish, but there are also Scandinavian, French, German and Belgian members. This year, the club has implemented a new system of joint captaincy: “The male and female captains have been joint. There are no differences between them, they are at the same level and they work together. We work very well with this system, called ‘Joint Captains’, and It’s been very funny”, says Alison. Her main legacy as a captain is “to keep on making this club the most friendly in Costa del Sol. Every new member realizes that we are a very friendly club, with lots of competitions and parties, and they quickly feel at home. I love this club. My parents were members, so I have been for as long as I can remember and that’s why I love to give back a little bit of the happiness that this club has given me along all these years”.
Alison started playing golf with her husband when she was 20 years old: “We were dating, we had lessons together. We started together and we’ve been playing golf together for 40 years now. We play together very often”. She just smirks when I ask her who plays better.
For Alison, there is a great difference in the way men and women play golf and she claims her club has very good female players: “There are, at least, ten excellent female players, and they are very competitive. We have achieved huge successes, but the most important thing is to have fun”.
Besides the competition, she considers golf “a wonderful game, and the only sport you can play with other players regardless of your handicap, your age or your gender. And if, on top of that, you have a weather like this”, she asserts as she looks at the blue sky, “golf is the best thing in the world”.
